A hydrometer is a glass instrument used to measure the specific gravity of liquids by comparing their density to that of water. It consists of a stem and a weighted bulb filled with mercury or lead, and is lowered into a tall container to freely float in the liquid being tested. The point where the liquid and the stem meet indicates the specific gravity, which can be read on the scale inside the stem. Different scales are available for different applications.
